Three skills that i have learned in LALT 101 are :

a) How to start researching a partiular topic; by this I mean that i should look for quick background information first regarding the topic. These quick information are accessed through search engines like Google.com or Ask.com

b) How to decide if the information retrieved is reliable or not; by this I mean we learnt how do diffrenciate scholar from popular articles and journals. Also, I learnt when to use which kind of sources

c) How to find precise information about a topic in a database; by this I mean we learnt how to narrow down a search, how to look for the right articles and also how to filter these articles to save up time. This is done by using the right search terms/phrases, bolean phrases, parentheses and truncations for instance

2. Think about the topics we covered in LALT 101 this semester. What ideas are you still confused about? Or, what would you have liked to spend more time practicing or learning?

I would have liked to spend more times on researching the different databases of the AUC Library, as I still find some difficulties in finding papers or sources for a specific topic. I also find it hard to search for scholar research papers on recent issues and topics in databases,as it is highly important for some of my college papers to only use scholary papers.

3. What did you like about blogging through WordPress?

I liked the fact that i created my own personal blog that I can use after completing the course. I also liked that i learnt how to have a personal blog and publish posts. Through blogging i learnt that it is actually an interesting way to express myself.

4. What didn’t you like about blogging through WordPress?

There’s nothing in particular that I didn’t like about blogging through WordPress. I would just have liked to spend more time on looking at different important blogs and how they are used in different areas and subjects.

To find this website I used Google.com as a search engine using the search phrases “Globalization Middle-East”. Yale Global appeared as the first website on the list of findings. To find out if the information provided by this website is credible or not I read the “Mission Statement” of the site and it turned out to be “flagship publication of the Yale Center for the Study of Globalization” which “explores the implications of the growing interconnectedness of the world by drawing on the rich intellectual resources of the Yale University community, scholars from other universities, and public- and private-sector experts from around the world”. The fact that the website is affiliated with the prestigious Yale University is enough to believe that the website provides accurate information.

2. The World Bank Group

This website I used Wikipedia.org to find it using “Globalization” as my search keyword. At the bottom of the page some links regarding the topic were posted and I chose the most relevent title to be the article I use for my research. From the name of the website itself a person could assume that it s a pretty credible source of information, but to reassure myself i checked the “Contact Us” link to know if the needed information was provided and i also read what was written under “About”.

2. What is the main argument of the editorial? Do you agree or disagree, and why?

The main argument of the editorial is that the difference between rulers in the US and Egypt is that the US presidents work to serve those who elected them, but people in the Arab world work to serve their rulers and surrender to their oppression and suppression and US presidential candidates create hope, and candidates for the presidency in our countries steal it. Yes, I do agree because the Egyptian citizen does not have and interest in voting for the presidential candidtates anymore, because he/she has other concerns that are of higher imprtance to him/her.

I would use Lexis Nexis when I need to find some of the latest articles ragarding my article when I am not allowed to use the Internet for my research. And i can also use it when i need to do a detailed, comprehensive news search.

3. When would you use Library Press Display instead of Google News or Lexis Nexis?

I would use library press release when I am browsing recent news from different countries and also when I want to see how the articles are illustrated in the newspapers, if its a front page article then it’s importance is highrt than a regular article on the second or third page.

The second database i looked at was Emerald Full Text and it covers the displine areas of Business, Management and Engineering. The database covers Abstracts from 1989 – present and Full Text from 1994 – present. the material it contains are case studies, conceptual papers, general reviews, literature reviews, research papers, technical papers and view points. it is not clear what other languages are available than english nor how often the data is updated. Emerald is accessible off-campus for authorized users only. and the full text is available if you click the ”Search only my subscribed journals” button.

the database that is easier to use is Business Source Complete as a student is probably more aquainted with it through the frequent use of academic search complete, also because there are more options on how to access the material a person wants. For a quick search i would use Emerald Full Text and for a more specific in-depth search i would use Business Source Complete as I can specify and narrow down my research more than in Emerald Full Text. I would rather use Business Source Complete in both cases and i do not think that i woul chose to use Emerald Full Text as Business Source Complete is more thorough, easier to use and make sthe acces of information more precise and  easier than Emerald Full Text, however i would use Emerald Full Text if i need articles that date back before 1994 which their full text is not available on Business Search Complete.

My research topic is Globalization.
